08/18/2007 - Portsmouth, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - It has not been the kind of start that new manager Sammy Lee had envisioned for his new Bolton squad as Wanderers dropped a 3-1 contest to Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday.
The loss is the third-straight defeat for Bolton to start the season and the club now sits at the bottom of the Premiership table.
Portsmouth, meanwhile, earned its first victory of the season and is now 1-0-2 on the young campaign.
Bolton enjoyed a good start as Nicolas Anelka gave the club the lead 12 minutes into the game, but Nwankwo Kanu erased the opener four minutes later, and then set up teammate John Utaka in the 30th minute to put Pompey ahead at the break. Matthew Taylor then secured the maximum points for the home side when he converted from the spot in the 88th minute.
Anelka tallied his second goal of the season after 12 minutes with some help from El-Hadji Diouf. Diouf played Anelka into the box on the left and the French striker held off defender Hermann Hreidarsson and fired a shot through the legs of Portsmouth keeper David James.
Kanu then leveled the match quickly with his first goal of the season. The Nigerian was making his first start of the year and he was in a good spot to tap home a flick by Utaka, who nodded the ball into Kanu's path after a cross by Gary O'Neil.
The favor was returned by Kanu in the 30th minute when he provided Utaka with a pass that allowed the midfielder to get in on goal. Utaka maneuvered past keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen and knocked in his second goal of the season.
Anelka tried to lift his team in the second half and threatened on a few occasions but he failed to receive any support from his teammates and was unable to get the job done.
The result was ensured with four minutes to play after Gerald Cid pulled down Kanu inside the box. Taylor put the game away from the spot, sending James the wrong way to give Portsmouth five points from three games.
In other action in England on Saturday, West Ham earned its first win of the season thanks to Mark Noble's penalty kick in the 70th as the Hammers downed Birmingham 1-0. Middlesbrough used two second-half goals to knock off Fulham 2-1, Everton suffered its first defeat of the year in a 1-0 loss to Reading with Stephen Hunt scoring the lone goal and Tottenham finally found its stride with a resounding 4-0 win against Derby as Steed Malbranque scored twice in the opening six minutes. Wigan picked up its second win in three games with a 3-0 triumph against Sunderland and Newcastle played to a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa.

Sportsbook refunded tens of thousands of dollars to customers who bet on Oakland, Green Bay and Tampa Bay, the three teams that stunk up the field so badly that their fans and backers never had a chance to get up from their couches and cheer. In the spirit of the low scoring start to the season, odds makers at the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino have set odds on how many total shutouts there will be this season.
MySportsbook.com has posted updated sports betting lines for week two of the season.
